ABOUT THIS COURSE

Climate change is widely recognized as the greatest threat in the 21st century. Canada’s health care system is a resource-intensive sector of the Canadian economy, responsible for at least 4.6% of greenhouse gas and 5.1% of carbon dioxide emissions annually. There are many opportunities to develop and implement sustainability interventions that won’t compromise the quality of health care. Through case studies and group discussion, you will develop knowledge, skills and collaborations that will help you to advocate for and participate in a shift toward a more environmentally sustainable health system. Hear from experts in sustainable care, explore practical examples of clinical practices and learn how to integrate sustainability within a health team, department or organization.

EXPECT TO LEARN HOW TO:

• explain the environmental impacts of the health sector and the business case for moving toward more sustainable health care practices;
• identify the characteristics of sustainable care and recognize opportunities for sustainable improvement;
• learn the critical steps to implement a sustainable quality improvement framework in a health organization/department/team;
• outline a strategy for testing a sustainability intervention and evaluating impact;
• learn how to normalize environmental sustainability in health care culture and practice to facilitate culture change; and learn what other companies/practitioners are doing in support of health care sustainability.
